General Information

Garland Porterfiled, MD body3A woman’s breasts often change over time, losing their youthful shape and firmness. These changes and loss of skin elasticity can result from a number of factors such as pregnancy, breast-feeding, weight lost, aging, and effects of gravity. Also known as mastopexy, a breast lift raises and firms the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour. Additionally, the areola can be reduced at the time of a breast lift if it has become enlarged.

Is it right for me? A breast lift can enhance your appearance and self-confidence. Breast lift surgery will not significantly change the size of your breasts, nor will it fill out the upper part of your breast. If you want your breasts to look fuller or smaller, you might want to consider either breast augmentation or breast reduction surgery. You may be a candidate for a breast lift if you have breasts that sag or have lost volume, your nipple and areola point downward, or one breast is lower than the other. Before you make a decision to have a breast lift, carefully consider your expectations and discuss them with Dr. Porterfield.

What should I expect during my consultation? During your initial consultation, it is important to discuss your expectations with Dr. Porterfield. He will examine your breasts and take measurements. He will also discuss the variables that may affect your procedure such as your age, the condition of your skin, and the size and shape of your breasts. He will go over the risks and complications of a breast lift and discuss the different types of techniques available. Scarring and recovery are other issues to discuss at the time of your consultation.

Where will my surgery be performed? A breast lift procedure may be performed in an out patient surgical facility, an ambulatory surgical facility, or in a hospital. Dr. Porterfield and the assisting staff will fully attend to your comfort and safety.

What does the procedure involve? The procedure takes on average two hours. The most common technique involves an anchor-shaped incision that follows the natural contour created by the breast. The incision outlines where the breast skin will be removed and is the new location for the nipple. The areola and nipple are placed in a higher position after the excess skin has been removed, and the stitches are placed around the areola in a vertical line that extends downward from the nipple area and along the breast’s lower crease.Garland Porterfiled, MD group1

What can I expect after the surgery? After the surgery, you’ll need to wear an elastic bandage or surgical bra over gauze dressing, which can be replaced by a soft support bra within a few days. This bra should be worn for three to four weeks over a layer of gauze. Stitches will be removed after two weeks. Any discomfort caused by bruising or swelling should only last a day or two and can be suppressed with medications prescribed by Dr.Porterfield, but the pain should not be severe. Numbness in the nipples and breast skin, caused by swelling, will subside over the next few weeks, but in some patients it can last up to a year or even be permanent.

What are the risks for a breast lift? All surgery carries some uncertainty and risk. A breast lift is not a simple operation, but it’s normally safe when performed by a well-qualified plastic surgeon. There is, however, always a possibility of a reaction to the anesthesia, bleeding, or infection though uncommon, and this can cause scars to widen. Dr. Porterfield will provide you with post surgery advice, and the best way to avoid complications is to follow this advice.
